Big Joe Law announced today a $3,525,000 settlement on behalf of a client who sustained catastrophic injuries after a commercial semi-truck violently rear-ended his disabled vehicle on eastbound State Route 60 in Riverside County.
The collision occurred on the morning of June 23, 2023, when the plaintiff's vehicle ran out of fuel and became disabled. The driver safely pulled as far onto the shoulder as possible and activated his emergency hazard lights while stopped in the number four lane.
According to the investigation, the approaching semi-truck driver had the disabled vehicle in clear view for at least 15 seconds prior to impact. Despite adequate time and visibility to respond, the commercial driver failed to slow down or take evasive action. Evidence established the truck driver was distracted at the time of the crash.

The impact rendered the plaintiff unconscious at the scene. Emergency responders transported him to Riverside Community Hospital, where he was diagnosed with life-altering injuries including:
- Traumatic brain injury
- Fractured scapula
- Multiple cervical vertebrae fractures requiring two-level cervical fusion surgery
The injuries have permanently altered the plaintiff's life and required extensive medical care, ongoing rehabilitation, and long-term treatment.
Big Joe Law established clear liability based on the commercial driver's failure to maintain proper attention and safely respond to a visible roadway hazard-a fundamental duty under both state and federal trucking regulations.
The $3.525 million settlement accounts for past and future medical expenses, lost earning capacity, pain and suffering, and the profound impact the collision has had on the plaintiff's quality of life.
